Build 9a5259f AKA iOS 5 Beta 3 was released to developers today which is the newest iOS version for iPad, iPhone and iPod and brings a few changes and fixes to the table.
  • Push and local notifications for apps appear in the new Notification Center in iOS 5. Notification Center displays notifications that are considered “unread”. In order to accommodate push and local notifications that have no “unread” status, developers can use their application badge count to trigger a clearing of notifications from Notification Center. When an application clears its badge count (by setting it to zero), iOS 5 will clear its notifications from Notification Center.
  • iMessage beta 3 will be unable to communicate with iMessage users on beta 1. It works between beta 3 and beta 2
  • Modal alerts don’t appear for iMessages.
  • When tweeting your location from Safari and exiting before the location can be established, the location arrow will stay in the status bar. The arrow can be removed by killing Safari from the task switcher.
  • Fixed: The Reminders application does not send notifications for reminders that are based upon the entry (and/or exit) of a location if there is no date associated with the reminder.
  • In this beta the option of “Choosing a security question” is not working during an iCloud account setup.
  • Fixed: After creating a recurring event locally on the device, the device stops syncing after hitting an error on merge. Removing and re-adding the account acts as a workaround for this.
  • Restoring from a Seed 1 backup or earlier will cause MobileMe/iCloud calendars not to sync. Subscribed calendars will show up in Calendars but none of your event calendars will appear in MobileCal. To work around the problem please remove and re-add the account.

The above map of the world is drawn using connections between 10 million Facebook Friends and was created by Facebook data structuring intern Paul Butler. The most interesting aspect is that all of the country borders are entirely drawn using Facebook friend connections too. Even if the world was dark and totally unmapped, Facebook could produce a remarkably good approximation of most of its continents’ boundaries, and even the borders of some countries.

Here is Butlers explanation on how he created the “world connection map”:

I defined weights for each pair of cities as a function of the Euclidean distance between them and the number of friends between them. Then I plotted lines between the pairs by weight, so that pairs of cities with the most friendships between them were drawn on top of the others. I used a color ramp from black to blue to white, with each line’s color depending on its weight. I also transformed some of the lines to wrap around the image, rather than spanning more than halfway around the world.

Later I replaced the lines with great circle arcs, which are the shortest routes between two points on the Earth. Because the Earth is a sphere, these are often not straight lines on the projection.

What really struck me, though, was knowing that the lines didn’t represent coasts or rivers or political borders, but real human relationships. Each line might represent a friendship made while travelling, a family member abroad, or an old college friend pulled away by the various forces of life.

As you’ll notice the lack of structure in China, Russia and Brazil. Although Facebook is dominant in many countries, primary ones who are predominantly English there are still other social network sites which control a majority of social network traffic in particular countries; see below:

  • China – QZone
  • Russia- VKontakte
  • Brazil – Orkut

Have you ever wanted Android-like panoramic wallpaper scrolling when you switch homescreens on your iPhone or iPod touch? Well, now you can with a tweak for jailbroken iPhones / iPod touches called Parallax.

This handy little tweak allows you to use widescreen wallpapers on your iPhone / iPod touch that scroll horizontally as you move from one homescreen to another. It’s a feature that is quite prevalent in Android smartphones.

All you have to do is upload some wide screen wallpapers onto your phone via iTunes (the ones that iOS would usually “cut” to fit the smaller screen of the iPhone) and select the auto scroll speed (or manual adjustment) in the tweak’s preferences inside the Settings app.

Requirements: Jailbroken iDevice running 4.x and above.

If you need to jailbreak your iDevice select your iOS below for instructions
