RIM announced a layoff or approximately 11% of their workforce. Affected employees in North America and several other countries will be notified this week. Thorsten Heins will be taking over as COO, Product and Sales and there will be several other senior management changes announced as well. Rim also plans on making changes in their sales, marketing and operations departments. As of right now both CEO’s are still holding their positions which was a hot debate a few months back when investors, employees and fans cried for new leadership.
RIM has just announced Q1 earnings which includes $4.9 billion in revenue and $695 million in profit. RIM also shipped 13.2 million Blackberry phones and over 500,000 Playbook tablets in Q1. The earnings fell on the low end of the forecasts which RIM believes will trickle into Q2 resulting in mild restructuring accompanied by a few layoffs. Rim plans on restructuring legacy departments and focusing it’s development on profitable growth departments. However, all this news led to the lowest stock close RIM has seen in the past 5 years Friday.
“RIM’s business is profitable and remains solid overall with growing market share in numerous markets around the world and a strong balance sheet with almost $3 billion in cash. We believe that with the new products scheduled for launch in the next few months and realigning our cost structure, RIM will see strong profit growth in the latter part of fiscal 2012.”, said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion.
Products launched on BlackBerry OS 7 will launch in late August or early September, followed a month later by the launch of the QNX- based “superphones” which will have email and BBM.

Blackberry also has a few other devices slated for release that will rival most smart phones on the market such as the Blackberry Monza

A court injunction has ended the long term Nokia vs Apple patent battle that dates back to 2007. Although the particulars are private Apple is to make a one time-payment followed by an ongoing royalty payment process for an unannounced term (period of time).
The agreement will result in settlement of all patent litigation between the companies, including the withdrawal by Nokia and Apple of their respective complaints to the US International Trade Commission.

Though it has a virtually identical form factor the Torch 2 bumps the specs across the board; from the camera to the RAM. It’s also running the next-gen Blackberry OS 7 (which is really OS 6.1). The device currently still lacks any QNX OS like the Playbook. This is what the first Blackberry Torch 9800 should have been.
What is the world’s most valuable consumer-facing brand? Over the past 4 years BrandZ Survey has been dominated by Google but in 2011 their answer has changed. Apple is now the hottest property in terms of consumer goodwill, earning an estimated valuation of $153.3 billion and leading a pack that includes the likes of RIM, Wells Fargo, Coca-Cola, BMW, HSBC, and Disney. The tech sector had a very strong year as a whole, with Facebook’s brand improving in value by a staggering 246 percent (to $19.1b) jumping on the list for the first time at 35 and Amazon becoming the world’s most valuable retailer (at $37.6b) jumping over Wal Mart?!?! in spite of having no actual stores. Sadly, there were some downers too, as Nintendo lost 37 percent of its brand worth over the past year, Nokia dropped by 28 percent, and the BlackBerry marque was considered 20 percent less awesome than before.
