According to sources close to (or inside) Apple Tuesday, Oct. 4 is the day Apple is currently expected to hold its next big media event, where the tech giant will unveil the next generation iPhone.

There has been a lot of conflicting rumours and reports about the exact timing of the event, including some that swear up and down it as taking place this month, the announcement will come in October. Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.

The is mark the first product launch announcement by Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook’s.

Contrary to some recent rumors, All Things Digital (ATD) reported (quoting sources familiar with the matter – i.e. Apple officials) the next generation iPhone is coming in October, not September.

Apple fans were disappointed when Apple didn’t release any information regarding the iPhone 5 at the yearly Worldwide Developers Conference in June (when new iPhones are usually announced) and most media outlets picked September as the most likely time slot for the launch.

The news that AT&T is halting employee vacations during September added more fuel to the rumor. But now ATD‘s source claims that this is unrelated to the new iPhone and it will actually be out in October.

Nothing has been leaked relating to what the next generation iPhone will look like and the features it’ll have.

Some rumors

  • NFC near field communication
  • Thinner phone design
  • Larger screen
  • Longer battery life

Confirmation on all these rumours won’t be available until October (or September, perhaps) to find out the truth.
