Spotify has been state-side for a little over a month now and Americans are eating up the Euro-born music provider.  The company is already racking in $1.1B in user fees and landed another $100 million in outside investors support to expand the service. The service reported today it has 1.4 million users in the United States with 175,000 paying for the premium service.


RIM announced a layoff or approximately 11% of their workforce. Affected employees in North America and several other countries will be notified this week. Thorsten Heins will be taking over as COO, Product and Sales and there will be several other senior management changes announced as well. Rim also plans on making changes in their sales, marketing and operations departments. As of right now both CEO’s are still holding their positions which was a hot debate a few months back when investors, employees and fans cried for new leadership.


Foursquare is two years old and 2011 is proving to be a great year for the social media “check-in” giant. In a blog post yesterday on the Foursquare site they they celebrated their 500,000 merchant account and June 20th celebrated their 10 millionth member. Adding to the roster of accomplishments they have recently partnered with AMEX (America Express) and have received almost $50 million in funding.

For those of you have haven’t used Foursquare it’s a social media app whereas users “check-in” to places around them ,share thoughts, deals, anything interesting and provide tips to people who are just checking in. See the video below for a demo!

Just over 1 year ago iPad (April 2010) the iPad launched which created a huge movement from desktop and laptop computer to tablets. July 1st, 2011 marked another milestone as Apple released a batch of new approved apps bring the AppStore iPad total to just above 100,000 apps. That’s not saying that apps for iPad are the best (although they are in most peoples books). Android and Windows Mobile 7/Mango are picking up lots of speed and apps are just soaring in the tablet world.

Today Windows Phone Marketplace by Microsoft passed 25,000 apps. Windows Phone 7 (WP7) is growing at a tremendous rate, higher than previously anticipated. As you can see by the chart above the marketplace had a slow start which sky rocketed once HTC, Nokia and other phone manufacturers  jumped on WP7 train. With Mango on the horizon there is no speculation that this app-frenzy is about to slow down.
