As all xtremespeeds.net users know torrent downloading has been disabled on the site for some time. To squash any rumors about authority seizures here is the official statement from XS staff

To answer some questions that people have been asking…the site was taken down as a precaution for everyone…and any decision we make will always be in the best interest of the community.  Things that are removed from site right now are NOT lost forever.  Nothing has been lost, just temporarily removed by our choice.  The new site will be 100% as xs was, in content, stats, staff, etc…the only change will be the link/server.

Well good news! It’s back up and running with all torrents, staff, stats, etc!

With all the trilogies out there it’s hard to say which one was better than the other and what sometimes can be difficult is which movie in the trilogy you liked most or least. Although each movie stemmed off of the previous they each had a somewhat different look and feel. Personally, I have a hard time saying one was better than the other. The first could be an action suspense movie with a bit of sci fi thrown in. The second, a sci fi action film with suspense thrown in. The third could be a Sci fi movie with action and suspense. Then comes choosing the movie I want to watch. Picking which to watch is usually a representation of the mood I am in or how I feel at the time more than a question of which is better. Most good trilogies encompass 2+ movies.

Below is a chart displaying the top 18 grossing trilogies and their average viewer rating.

  • The height of the blue bar represents the average viewer rating; higher is better.

Today, Miramax signed a multi-year agreement with Netflix to allow the online streaming media giant to showcase it’s movies in it’s extensive television and movie catalog. This will bring Pulp Fiction, The English Patient, Kill Bill, and hundreds of other movies starting next month. A deal between the two was rumored back in March and is now confirmed. The deal is worth $100 million and is Miramax’s first agreement allowing it’s content to be streamed digitally.

Yes, the title is correct! Shocking. At least 23,000 bitTorrent users will soon receive notification that they are being sued for downloading the Expendables in what may become the single largest illegal-BitTorrent-downloading case in U.S. history.

Document Filed

A few things to note here

  • A federal judge in the case has agreed to allow the U.S. Copyright Group to subpoena ISP’s (internet service providers) to find out the identity of users who had illegally downloaded the 2010 Sylvester Stallone movie.
  • Once an ISP receives the subpoena, it usually notifies the account holder that his or her subscriber information is being turned over to the Copyright Group.

Now, one thing to remember is, some USA ISP’s still deem users information to be private and typically uphold their customers privacy and some ISPs simply send document to customers warning them to stop this activity to avoid their account being suspended (those users would be the lucky ones)

Subpoenas are expected to go out this week but what will come of it is inconclusive at the moment. What we do know is that many lawyers are mimicking the Copyright Group’s legal strategy, which includes offering online settlement payments, in hopes of making quick cash. Not all federal judges, are agreeing to allow a massive number of subpoenas in a single case, but a majority are. The U.S. Copyright Act allows damages of up to $150,000 per infringement, and the cases all demand the maximum which I feel is very steep in retro-spec.

Thomas Dunlap, who heads the Copyright Group in Washington, D.C., did not return phone messages or release any statements. He informed the court Wednesday that, so far, he’s obtained 23,322 IP addresses that have allegedly infringed the Expendables, up from 6,500 when he initially filed the District of Columbia federal court case in February.

Google’s service essentially mimics the music locker functionality of Amazon’s Cloud service, howeverm is not able to sell music direct to customers. Currently, Google Music has been unable to strike any deals with record labels stating their business models were “unreasonable and unsustainable”. So, rather than putting the service on hold, Google has launched (beta) its music service with the ability to store up to 20,000 of your own uploaded songs for free which you can then stream over the web to your desktop or Android phone or tablet — any device that supports Flash (don’t worry iOS users, your timewill come).

In comparison, Amazon’s service only offers 5GB of free storage for about 1,200 songs stored and at lower bitrate (stream quality is capped). Google will also best Amazon with a feature that automatically creates playlists.

Beta’s are available for a limited time at http://music.google.com to US residents so grab it while you can and discuss your results below to benefit others!

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced Friday that Bose, the 81-year-old founder of the sound system company that bears his name, has donated the majority of Bose Corp.’s stock to the school. The donation is in the form of non-voting shares, MIT said. The monetary value of the shares were not disclosed, and MIT cannot sell its Bose shares. The school will not participate in the management or governance of the company, but it will receive annual cash dividends on its shares when Bose pays them out. A spokeswoman for Bose said the company will remain privately held and “operate as it always has.” She declined to comment further on the gift.

“Dr. Bose has always been more concerned about the next two decades than about the next two quarters,” MIT president Susan Hockfield said in a prepared statement. “[He] has asked us not to shine too bright a spotlight on him today. So to honor that wish, let us simply celebrate Dr. Bose’s profound belief in the transformative power of an MIT education.”
